Holding Space: Mixed-Media Vessels
With Lianna Gilman
Available spots
Service Description
Mondays, October 5, 12, 19 & 26 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM Cost: $55 for the 4-class series Materials fee: $10 (paid to Lianna at first class) What fascinates me about vessels is how they’re more than either empty shapes or containers for physical items – they can also hold space. They remind me to hold space for new possibilities in everyday life rather than have a singular focus on a pre-determined destination. Using a relaxed, free-style approach, we’ll play with several vessel forms, including fabric maché shaped on balloons; thread made into magical nests with dissolvable stabilizer; and assembled structures whimsically embellished with fabric, wire and other materials. The emphasis is on curiosity, authenticity and the natural perfection of being imperfect. An abundance of the basic materials for all of the forms will be provided. Participants, please bring: - Fabric, yarn, beads, charms, old jewelry, etc from your stash, if you want to work with them - Basic hand-sewing supplies – pins, needles, small scissors etc - Your own sewing machine if it’s easy to transport – or – you can assemble and pin the foundations in class and then machine-stitch at home. There will be at least 1 sewing machine in the classroom to use if you don’t have one. Lianna Gilman is a free-style weaver and fiber artist with an adventurous mixed-media spirit. She creates one-of-a-kind wearable art, wall-hangings, table-runners, vessels and whimsical whatnots. Visit www.heartsong-weaving.com for more about her work. You can pay $55 by credit card as part of your registration process, or you can put cash or a check made out to WIAC (Whidbey Island Arts Council) in the payment jar in our classroom. If the full fee is a stretch for you, please pay as you are able - this ensures the future of Create Space.
