Holding Space: Mixed-media vessels With Lianna Gilman Thursdays, February 5, 12, 19 and 26 1:00 to-3:00 pm Cost is $45 for the 4-class series. Additional materials fee to Lianna is $15. What fascinates me about vessels is how they’re more than “empty” forms – they evoke a sense of receptivity or transformation as well as being practical containers for physical items. They remind me to hold space for curiosity and possibility in everyday life, for what might emerge when I hold a direction rather than a destination Using a relaxed, free-style approach, we’ll play with several vessel forms: tissue, fabric and thread applied to balloon or vase molds; fabric and yarn stitched into bowls, cylinders or nests; and assembled structures whimsically embellished with fabric, wire and other materials. The emphasis is on curiosity, experimentation and being true to your inner artist. There are no rules about what’s right or wrong, no pressure to produce “art.” An abundance of the basic materials for all of the forms will be provided. Participants, please bring: Fabric, yarn, beads, charms, old jewelry, etc from your stash, if you want to work with them Basic hand-sewing supplies – pins, needles, small scissors etc For machine sewing, bring your own sewing machine – or -- you can assemble and pin the foundations in class and then machine-stitch at home. There will be at least 1 sewing machine in the classroom to use if you don’t have one. Lianna Gilman is a free-style weaver and fiber artist with an adventurous mixed-media spirit.
