My passion for calligraphy began in 1976 when I was fortunate to study Italic and Roman scripts with master calligrapher and teacher Lloyd Reynolds. Over my forty years of being a calligrapher, I have learned other beautiful scripts. I continue that practice today, with the use of Copperplate and brush calligraphy. In this class I will teach basic strokes that form beautiful brush letters. Our writing tools will be a Pentel brush pen and a Fudenosuke brush pen by Tombow. Students will use inexpensive bond or copy paper for practice. Throughout the four week class we will also make my favorite handmade pens with kits provided by me. I look forward to sharing my love and passion for calligraphy. We will let you know which brush stroke pens to order, once you have registered for the class. Mary McLeod's bio: For 25 years, I taught music in Lake Stevens, Bellevue and Edmonds school districts. After completing a Masters of Education degree, with a specialization in Integrated Arts from Lesley University in 2000, I was finally able to teach in my own community. I taught art at South Whidbey Intermediate, South Whidbey Elementary, Langley Middle School and Bayview School. I retired in 2012 to become a full time artist, selling my work at The Whidbey Art Gallery in Langley. In the Fall of 2013 I was a substitute music and art teacher for Mukilteo and South Whidbey School districts. I did this until March of 2020. For 22 years I have been a teacher in the summer program at the Grunewald Guild in Plain, WA. I began as a calligraphy teacher and now teach the construction of journals with watercolor and mixed media surface techniques. For me, Calligraphy is an important element in these journals, and I encourage students to add the beauty of lettering to their journals. For many years I have been asked to teach calligraphy, and Create Space now gives me that opportunity.
