Block Printing: Holiday Cards
With Susanne Ohrvik
Available spots
Service Description
Block printing is one of the oldest art techniques in the world, originally used on fabric in Asia, and then for book production throughout the world. It is still being used today in fine art, home décor and for other printmaking uses. In this workshop we will use block printing to create holiday cards. Greeting cards, note cards or gift tags. We only meet twice, so a bit of homework may be needed in between the two sessions, depending on what you decide to create. Please bring a flattish, wooden kitchen spoon for transferring the inked plate to paper. If you have a cutting tool you like, please bring it, but we have quite a few Speedball cutting tools if you don’t have one. A 5–10-dollar materials fee will be charged for paint, inks, and printing paper, at cost. All other supplies (printing blocks, proof paper etc.) are provided. I suggest you google “block printing” images to see what style you might like, and have an idea of the design you want to make when you come to the class. Keep in mind the simplistic block printing style. BIO: Susanne Ohrvik has been making art in many different forms her entire life. She is originally from Sweden and has lived on Whidbey Island for over 25 years. She has been making holiday cards for over 35 years as a way to embrace the season and stay in touch with friend and family. Often her cards are made with block printing.
