Basketry: Weaving Small Baskets

Fridays, October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 10:00 AM – Noon Cost: $55 We will learn the basics of making three kinds of small, decorative baskets. Plaited baskets; small wicker baskets; and garlic baskets. Using the plaited method we will stretch our creativity to make “art baskets” using paper strips, tin can strips, copper sheeting, flat basketry reed or whatever interests you. In the wicker basketry and garlic baskets we will use reed and earn techniques such as over-laid based, split-spoke base, Japanese weave, pairing weave, three rod wailing, and a basic rolled border. We will make the Plaited Baskets during the last two weeks of class so you will have time to find unique weaving material. A $6 materials fee is included in the cost. Bring: If you have them, cutters or utility scissor, diagonal cutters, awl. Some will be available to borrow. Marcy Johnson has been making paper and books, weaving, spinning, and making jewelry and has been enjoying teaching people these arts for several decades. Marcy was the owner and operator of Weaving Works in Seattle’s University District for 50 years. You will find her beautiful woven goods and jewelry at the Bayview Saturday farmers’ market and in the Artworks Gallery in Langley. You can pay $55 by credit card as part of your registration process, or you can put cash or a check made out to WIAC (Whidbey Island Arts Council) in the payment jar in our classroom.
