Join mixed media artist Claudia Fuller for an adventure in learning how to make a variety of artful handmade books you can use for journaling, sketching, watercolor painting, gift giving or any other purpose.
We will begin with basic books and move on to more complex types so that you build your skill week by week. We’ll begin by playing with single pieces of paper to fashion a four-page book. We’ll start out with copy paper to learn the technique.
We’ll then decorate a larger piece of paper and fashion it into a book that will be suitable for adding words or drawings. From there we’ll move on to making notebooks using a pamphlet stitch. We’ll also learn how to do Japanese stab stitch binding that can be used on multiple ways in bookbinding. We will then follow your interests in learning more complicated techniques. You’ll come away with a series of books and journals and the know how to make them on your own.
Class size is limited to 8 students
All must have proof of vaccination and wear a mask
All materials will be provided, but please bring any special papers, pens, watercolors, or other special art materials you may have that you’d like to use in your bookmaking adventure.
Claudia Fuller has always enjoyed creating artful items and has become confident enough to call herself a mixed media artist. Ten years ago, she made her first book and hasn’t stopped since. She makes books for gifts and she makes books to fill up with her art making. She uses watercolor papers, book board and book cloth for some and recycled boxes and cardboard for others. Filling books with paintings, calligraphy, quotes and memories is how she documents her life.
