Let’s make a single sheet coptic binding book. I just learned this stitch this summer and want to share it. The signatures in this book, instead of being folded, are single sheets of thicker weight paper. We’ll use four (4) needles to sew the book together. This is NOT a technique for beginning book makers.

In the first 2 hour class we shall make book cloth and attach it to the book board to form our covers. If using paper for the cover, students will cover book board with their selected paper. We’ll also get our pages cut to size and poke holes in them.

In the second 2 hour class we’ll sew our books together.

Supplies Needed

Choose any paper and size you’d like to work with. Just make sure it’s sturdy enough for the binding. For your first foray into this binding I’d suggest you go no larger than 6” high and 8” wide.

Suggestions for pages:

Watercolor or printmaking paper (not lighter than 180 lb)

This is a perfect binding for gathering a group of art pages, paintings, prints, mixed media, of the same size, into a finished book. This is also a great way to bind together a postcard collection.

2 pieces of book board (or use an old hardback book - cut the pages out of the book and use the front and back pieces cut down to size for your pages.)

Height of your cover = height of your signature + 1/4”

Width of your cover = width of your signature + 1/4”

Cover Materials

2 pieces of book cloth or decorative paper approximately 2” larger than covers.

2 end papers 1/4” smaller than cover.

Grain for cover materials (if working with paper or book cloth) should be parallel to the books spine.

Materials for Book Cloth

Double sided fusible webbing

Thin paper such as sketching paper, deli paper, not tissue paper, however.

Chosen fabric for cover.

Other Supplies

-4 needles, preferably same size and blunt, with eyes large enough for thread to pass through.

-Waxed thread. The thicker the pages, the thicker the thread. 300 lb watercolor paper pages need a 4-ply thread.

Instructor will provide glue and other materials.

Claudia Fuller is a mixed media artist who has always enjoyed creating artful items. Ten years ago, she made her first book and hasn’t stopped since. She makes books for gifts and she makes books to fill with her art making. She uses watercolor papers, book board and book cloth for some journals and recycled boxes and cardboard for others. Filling books with painting, calligraphy, quotes and memorys is how she documents her life.
