About the event

Making Books with Sewn Over Tapes Bindings

With Claudia Fuller

Thursdays, October 20 & 27

1-4 PM

Suggested cash donation: $5-$10 per class day (donations go to our future teachers fund to allow us to lead classes after our current grant runs out)

For safety, we require proof of vaccination and mask wearing

Join our popular bookmaking instructor to learn to make exquisitely beautiful journals using a binding technique using sewn over tapes. This class is for people who  have some experience with bookmaking. If you have taken Claudia's Coptic Bookmaking Class, or something similar you would qualify.

In this class we will fold and tear two sheets of 22 x 30” paper to create 16 sheets of paper that will be folded in half and nestled together to create 8 signatures. We’ll cover book board, or heavy cardboard with decorative paper for our book covers.

We’ll sew the signatures together, stitching around 3 “ribbons” of Kraft tex (supplied by instructor), to create a book block. We’ll combine the book block and covers to create a finished book approximately 5-3/4” wide by 7-3/4” high.

We’ll affix the “ribbons” to the front and back of our books with double stick tape and glue (a technique Claudia has developed in lieu of cutting and inserting the ribbons through the book cover.)

Claudia Fuller is a mixed media artist who has always enjoyed creating artful items. Ten years ago, she made her first book and hasn’t stopped since. She makes books for gifts and she makes books to fill with her art making. She uses watercolor papers, book board and book cloth for some journals and recycled boxes and cardboard for others. Filling books with painting, calligraphy, quotes and memories is how she documents her life.
